What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people were killed and over 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
