UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
