Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
