The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.” With the first season of the hit program reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus. Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that. “It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.” In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show. “We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.” “Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes. A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus? So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of. “There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.” Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort. “I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.” Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales? “I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes. Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
