Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
