People have gathered across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The incident saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of people killed in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the conditions of the proposal.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks said that an late session of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.

The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to produce any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • After-conflict administration of the area

Public Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until each abducted person are released none of us will be secure."

"After we see all home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence recover," she continued.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Activist Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now consistently show that about 70% of Israelis desire the conflict to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the evening falls, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, clinging, especially my little child who rests his face on me all night."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of several people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis said another two victims had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south region, medical staff said.
