American actor Pat Finn, who appeared in beloved television series including Friends, Seinfeld and "The Middle", has died aged 60.

The comedy and improvisation performer succumbed at his home in Los Angeles, California on Monday after undergoing treatment for a cancer diagnosis beginning in 2022, per reports.

"Pat considered no one a stranger - only friends he didn't know yet," his relatives said in a statement.

They continued that he had "experienced life to the fullest - with joy and exuberance".

An Extensive Television Career

Finn's first television role was in the George Wendt Show in the mid-90s, where he portrayed the brother of the main character.

He subsequently landed a recurring role on Murphy Brown in the latter half of the 1990s.

He played the part of a party host named Joe Mayo in "Seinfeld" in 1998, portraying a social organizer known to delegate burdensome jobs to his guests.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, he made guest appearances on numerous hit series, including:

  • King of Queens
  • Friends
  • "That '70s Show"
  • House, M.D.

He was most recognized for his portrayal of the character Bill Norwood in The Middle, starring in eight seasons from 2011 to 2018.

His cinematic roles include It's Complicated (2009) and "Santa Paws 2".

A Life in Improv

Away from his acting parts, Finn was deeply involved in improvisational comedy and served as an educator at the University of Colorado, where he was a professor.

He was a member of a comedy group of six called "Beer Shark Mice".

"Finn taught, supported, and inspired numerous pupils over the years and it would be difficult to find anyone anyplace who has an unkind word to say about him," his family wrote.

Paying homage, colleague and actor Richard Kind remarked there was "no kinder, gentler, funnier, down to earth person you could encounter".

"Always positive, making those around him better and funnier. A wonderful father and man," Kind wrote online.

Finn is leaves behind his spouse Donna, three children, and his family.
